Believers reminded to observe hygiene in making Eid al-Adha sacrifices
The Caucasus Muslims Department's Qadi Council has issued a fatwa on Eid al-Adha, the upcoming Festival of Sacrifice.

The Qadi Council congratulates the Azerbaijani people and all Muslims on the holiday and wishes them prosperity and divine protection, the Muslims Department said in a statement.

The holiday, known as Qurban Bayrami in Azerbaijani and the Festival of the Sacrifice in English, commemorates Abraham's readiness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God.

The fatwa says that it is important to offer animals as sacrifice during the Hajj to Mecca.

"God welcomes the sacrifice of animals by people who have the wherewithal to do it," the fatwa says.

Animals chosen for sacrifice should be healthy. Goats and sheep must be at least one year old, bulls and cows over two years old and camels five years old before they can be sacrificed, the fatwa continues.

It says that all veterinary and hygienic norms should be observed when slaughtering the animals.

Believers should pray, then distribute the meat of the sacrificial animal among the poor on the holiday days, 6-7 November, which have been declared non-working days in Azerbaijan.

It is a holy deed to share the joy of the holiday with needy and indigent citizens and to celebrate it together with refugees and displaced persons, the council states
