WHO sees improvement in TB situation in Azerbaijan

The World Health Organization (WHO) no longer includes Azerbaijan in its list of countries with the highest burden of tuberculosis.

In the WHO's 2011 Global Tuberculosis Report, released on Tuesday, Azerbaijan has been removed from the list of 22 countries where TB is a very serious problem. The countries with the highest TB burden include Afghanistan, India and Indonesia.

The report says that Azerbaijan had 8,394 cases of TB registered in 2010, of which 6,390 were new or relapsed cases.

Of these cases, 2,050 are reported to be multi-drug-resistant, which the WHO considers to be a high burden of cases.

Worldwide, the number of new cases of tuberculosis has dropped for the first time, while the death toll from the disease reached its lowest level in a decade, helped by progress in countries such as China, the WHO said on Tuesday.

In 2010, 8.8 million people fell ill with TB and 1.4 million died, both marking a notable decline over prior years, the WHO said.
