Eurovision needs a Plan B venue in Baku

Eurovision Song Contest officials have been visiting Baku to discuss preparations for the 2012 contest, which will be held in the city in May.

The contest's executive supervisor, Jon Ola Sand, and events director, Sietse Bakker met the general director of Azerbaijan's Public Television, Ismayil Omarov, in Baku.

Prior to the visit, Sietse Bakker suggested in the European media that Baku should have a contingency venue ready to host the contest, in case the planned new facility is not ready on time.

"This is my first visit to Azerbaijan. The hospitality, cleanliness and infrastructure of the city have impressed me. There is nothing unusual in my suggestion of a Plan B for the contest," Sietse Bakker said.

"We discussed the venue of the contest in Baku with the ITV managers. If a new site is going to be built for the contest, it must be built on time, but a Plan B is needed as a spare. If for any reason and problems, the new facility is not commissioned on time, you must have an alternative for the contest."

Baku's Eurovision organizers are remaining coy about the venue for the competition, promising to announce it later.

Commenting on the talks with ITV, Eurovision Executive Supervisor Jon Ola Sand said: "We discussed many issues related to the contest and are pleased with the preparation process. The meeting set priorities in preparing for the contest."
