Azerbaijan marks the Salvation Day today. Azerbaijan got its independence in October 1991. The first years of the independence are characterized by the crisis within the country and in the government. Chaos occupied all the spheres of the social life.
As a result of negligent policy, the scale of revolt extended and became uncontrolled. Rebels were moving toward Baku and demanding change of power.
In such a hard period of time people invited the prominent son of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev from Nakhchivan to Baku. With the insistence of the people and the authorities of the republic he came to Baku in June 19.
Heydar Aliyev, prominent public and political figure, who was the speaker of the Nakhchivan Supreme Mejlis (parliament) in that time, accepted the insistent invitation of the government and came to Baku on June 9. Taking the mission to shield the country from the civil war, Heydar Aliyev left for Ganja at the risk of his life and as a result of negotiations he prevented the extension of civil confrontation.
In June 15, 1993 Heydar Aliyev elected the chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan and this date entered our history as the day of National Salvation. With the insistence of the people in June 1997 Milli Mejlis (National Assembly) declared June 15 a holiday.
