Armenian refugees from Syria settled in Azerbaijan’s occupied lands
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov received Director-General of the International Organization for Migration William Lacy Swing, SIA was told by the foreign ministry.
During the meeting, William Lacy Swing said the organization’s office in Baku has been operating since the late ‘90s, noting that its relations with Azerbaijan are developing successfully. He outlined that the implementation of Azerbaijan’s migration policy, the state’s experience in the creation of institutional and legislative base, and the center it has created for illegal migrants to be detained in decent and humane way, can be a good example for other states.
The director-general also noted that in the modern world there can’t be any mono-ethnic state – like in the 19th century, saying that states must tolerate diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural composition and that Azerbaijan’s rich multiculturalism and traditions of tolerance is an example to the world.
Minister Elmar Mammadyarov noted in turn that Armenia has become a mono-ethnic state thanks to its ethnic-cleansing policy and more than a million Azerbaijanis have become refugees and IDPs in the wake of Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan. The minister touched upon the issue of the settlement of Armenian refugees from Syria in Azerbaijan’s occupied lands, saying that the International Organization for Migration and other international organizations should pay attention to this problem. He added that attempts to carry out of settlement policy in the occupied lands and to deliberately change the demographic composition are forbidden under international humanitarian law.
The sides then exchanged views on the recent migration problems raging across Europe, categorization of migrants for ethnic identity, deaths of migrants in the Mediterranean and other issues of common interest.
