Conservative MP David Davies, the Chairman of the Welsh Affairs Select Committee, has said that the West owes Azerbaijan a debt of gratitude for its steadfast support of the NATO troops serving in the ISAF force in Afghanistan. Mr Davies, in addition to his duties as an MP, serves as a special constable - and he previously served in the territorial army.
In recent years Azerbaijan has sent troops to Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. Currently 40% of all supplies for the ISAF mission pass through Azerbaijan or Azerbaijani air space. When NATO starts to withdraw from Afghanistan next year the 'air bridge' will become even more vital. Moreover, heavy equipment is likely to be routed through Azerbaijan. Having been freighted through Kazakhstan, it will then be shipped across the Caspian, and loaded on to the Baku Tbilisi Kars railway in order to reach NATO territory in Turkey.
