Fight against bribery and corruption to be intensified in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that the fight against bribery and corruption must be intensified.

He said this on Tuesday, February 12, speaking at a conference dedicated to the results of the fourth year of the State Program on socio-economic development of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2009-2013.

"I consider that we failed to achieve the desired result in this sphere. Even despite the fact that the struggle in this area is carried and will continue. Corruption is a serious problem. If we really want to become a developed country, we need to root out corruption. In order to succeed in this issue, there is a need for a number of factors that are present in Azerbaijan. These are the serious political will and international experience", the head of state said.

According to him, this experience is being studied in Azerbaijan.

"Measures of punishment and systemic reforms must continue. We approached this issue complexly, a definite work has already been carried out. However, I have to note that results of this work do not satisfy me. Combat against corruption must be even serious, there is a need for more serious results. Each culprit must bear responsibility. Therefore the law enforcement bodies must carry out a more serious fight against this phenomenon", he said.

The president noted that systemic reforms will continue as well.

"They include e-services, ASAN service system, e-government. All these initiatives will become a serious instrument in fighting against corruption. ASAN Service is already being implemented. This service will cover at least Baku and all its regions, as well as Ganja and Sumgayit. This is minimum.

Probably, other cities will be connected to this system by the end of this year. All cities must be connected to the system in coming years. We see the good results of this initiative", President Ilham Aliyev said.
