"Azerbaijan's territorial integrity is inviolable"

On 28 November, EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Philippe Lefort met with the chairman of the Azerbaijan community of Nagorno-Karabakh, Bayram Safarov, and chairman of the Coordinating Council of the Organization Orkhan Akbarov.

According to the organization, at the meeting Safarov spoke about the history of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, stressing its threat not only for Azerbaijan, but also for the entire region.

The community chairman informed the EU Special Representative about the fact that international organizations that seek to solve this problem have for already 20 years been allowing double standards and do not take a firm position on the issue.

"We are confident that in the near future, the conflict will be resolved within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, which is consistent with the principles of international law," he said.

In turn Akbarov emphasized the participation of the EU in resolving the conflict.

"Unfortunately, the efforts of international organizations do not give results. Thus, the OSCE Minsk Group has for 20 years been trying to resolve this problem, but there are no real offers. At the same time, four UN resolutions adopted on Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions are not fulfilled," said Akbarov.

He said that the EU should strive for dialogue between communities and increase the participation of the parties in EU programs and projects in this field.

"International organizations should stop the policy of double standards. The conflict has to find a constructive solution, and refugees and internally displaced persons should return to their homes," said Akbarov.

EU Special Representative expressed his satisfaction with his visit to Baku and meeting with representatives of the Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh.

"The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a crucial issue for the EU. The EU recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and the territorial integrity of each country, including Azerbaijan, is inviolable. The EU is in favor speedy and peaceful resolution of the conflict and considers it important to continue negotiations to this end. There must be a dialogue between the communities, which will accelerate the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," said Philippe Lefort.
