European Parliament's resolution on situation of human rights in Azerbaijan biased- Ogtay Asadov

European Parliament's resolution on the situation of human rights and democracy in Azerbaijan is biased and does not reflect the realities of Azerbaijan, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov is convinced.

In his letter to the Chairman of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, the speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament recalls the facts of repression of unauthorized rallies and campaigns in the advanced European countries.

"The elimination of attempts of political groups to hold illegal actions in Baku, which have no public support, should not be construed as a violation of human rights and democracy", the letter states.

Asadov points to measures taken in Azerbaijan in the sphere of democracy and human rights, as reflected in the Constitution and other laws of the country.

"Human rights and freedoms are declared supreme values of the Azerbaijani state. It is no coincidence that one third of the articles of the Azerbaijani Constitution are dedicated to this issue. In this regard, I can recall and other legislation in this area, for example, the laws "On the rights and freedoms of citizens", "On political parties", "Election Code", "Freedom of Information", "On gender equality" etc. All this indicates that the Azerbaijani government has paid and continues to pay special attention to human rights and freedoms ", Asadov emphasizes.

The speaker also notes the free activity of thousands of media outlets, NGOs and other civil society institutions in the country. Nevertheless, he says much should be still done in these areas.

"Azerbaijan is a young democratic government, and the possibilities for democracy are endless. With the development of democratic processes, there appear new challenges that the Azerbaijani government continues to decide. The main issue is that we have the political will to address these problems. Therefore, the support of international organizations in carrying out democratic reforms is important. Biased assessment of all of these steps does not help, but instead prevents the common cause. Therefore, the resolution adopted by the European Parliament can be viewed as strikethrough of all previous achievements," the letter says.

With regard to the demolition of houses of citizens for the improvement of the city, the speaker reminded that each owner was paid EUR 1,500 per square meter, "which is adequate compensation".

Asadov noted that mentioning the name of the Azerbaijani president in the resolution was unethical.
