Washington holds the third Azerbaijan-US Intergovernmental Commission
The Azerbaijan-US Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation will hold its long-awaited third meeting on 18-20 April in Washington.
The date was announced today by Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry press secretary Elman Abdullayev.
The co-chairman of the commission on the Azerbaijani side is Finance Minister Samir Sharifov, while the US co-chairman is the under secretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment, Robert D. Hormats.
Robert Hormats said earlier that the USA supported Azerbaijan’s efforts to join the World Trade Organization.
Addressing a House of Representatives subcommittee last month, Hormats noted that Azerbaijan’s economy had tripled since 2004: "According to World Bank statistics, poverty decreased from 49% to 9% from 2003 to 2009. Azerbaijan imported $328m worth of goods from the US in 2011, up 30% from 2010".
The first meeting of the US-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission was held in 2007 in Baku and the second in 2008 in Washington.
An official at the US embassy in Baku said two years ago that Washington was keen for a meeting of the commission to be held in 2010. No meeting took place in 2010 in what was not the best year for US-Azerbaijani relations.
Washington must be pleased with the scheduling of the meeting this year at a time when the US does not have an ambassador in Baku.
