Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan arrives in Tehran for talks.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has arrived in Iran’s capital of Tehran, heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, for talks with senior Iranian officials.
The Turkish premier was welcomed at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport by Iran\'s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi upon his arrival early Wednesday.
During his two-day official visit, Erdogan is scheduled to hold talks with Iran\'s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi.
Senior Iranian and Turkish officials will also exchange views on mutual relations as well as the latest developments in the Middle East. They are also likely to discuss issues relevant to Iran\'s nuclear energy.
Erdogan is also scheduled to inaugurate Turkey’s cultural center in Tehran.
Observers say the visit by the Turkish premier will likely shape future ties between the two neighboring nations and regional powers that have witnessed significant growth in the economic sphere in recent years.
Despite their cordial relations, however, Tehran and Ankara do not share common views on the current situation in Syria.
Iran has also expressed disappointment over Turkey’s hosting of a NATO radar system on its soil. Ankara has given verbal assurances to Tehran that the system does not pose a threat to the Islamic Republic.
