French Constitutional Council reportedly throws out genocide law
Turkish media report that the French Constitutional Council has thrown out a law passed by the National Assembly criminalizing denial of genocide.

Constitutional Council had ruled that the law was not constitutional during a sitting on Tuesday.

At the end of January, the French Senate passed a bill which threatens with jail anyone in France who denies that the 1915 killings of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey amounted to genocide. A group of senators subsequently referred the bill to the Constitutional Council for review.

The bill prompted fury in Turkey with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan denouncing it as \"tantamount to discrimination and racism\".

France has already officially recognized the killings as genocide, but the new law would go further by punishing anyone who denies this with up to a year in jail and a fine of 45,000 euros ($57,000).
