EU would like to play a more weighty role in support to Azerbaijan and Armenia in settling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. This conflict is very complication and there is a need to settle it.
The statement came from EU Supreme Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton speaking in Brussels before the session of the Council for External Affairs.
She noted that the broad discussion on the situation in the South Caucasus, including in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia is to be held today as part of the Council session. And one of the main discussions on South Caucasus will be the issue of Karabakh.
"We will discuss what the EU Council can do in this view", Ashton said noting that though EU is not a direct mediator in the conflict resolution, the special envoy on this region Philip Lefort was initially appointed to this post.
