Baku will continue to work towards the international recognition of the Khojaly genocide as a heinous crime against humanity.

Ali Hasanov, head of the public policy department at the Presidential Administration, said that recognition of the tragedy was part of the decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on measures to mark the 20th anniversary of Khojaly.

"The decree clearly prescribed various activities associated with this date at home and abroad, as well as working towards recognition of the Khojaly genocide in the parliaments of different countries," Hasanov said.

The head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, Ramiz Mehdiyev, has signed a corresponding instruction. "All state and diplomatic structures of the country have been given the clear objective of working on this," Hasanov said.

He recalled that events to mark the 20th anniversary of Khojaly were under way around the world.

This work also involves the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani diaspora who send appeals for the recognition of the Khojaly genocide to the parliaments of a number of countries.

"The position of official Baku is to achieve recognition of the Khojaly genocide by the international community and to hold accountable those who committed this crime for the world to see the true face of the Armenian aggressors," Ali Hasanov said.

Dismissing claims by the Armenian side that the genocide against the Azerbaijani people was not committed by Armenians and that Azerbaijanis were to blame themselves, Hasanov said that the issue required no public comment or discussion: "The whole world knows who committed this crime, its organizers and perpetrators are known. By such claims, the Armenians seek to distract public attention from this issue."

Regarding the steps that Baku has taken to hold the organizers and perpetrators of the crime responsible, Hasanov said: "The Azerbaijani authorities do not intend to disclose their plans regarding this issue - the state takes all necessary measures step by step."

"The Azerbaijani government is determined to bring to justice the perpetrators of this terrible crime," he added.
