FMA condemned French Senate's passage of a bill to criminalize denial of genocide
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has condemned the French Senate's passage of a bill to criminalize denial of genocide.

"The Republic of Azerbaijan deeply regrets the adoption by the French Senate of the draft law "On criminalization of the denial of the existence of genocides recognized by law" on 23 January 2012 and resolutely condemns this decision," the statement says.

"The French Senate’s unilateral action, which runs counter to the principles of democracy, human rights, freedom of speech and expression, can seriously damage the country’s involvement in the region and lead to unpleasant consequences.

"This decision of French parliamentarians, who have turned a blind eye to the violation of the rights of nearly a million Azerbaijanis and the occupation of 20% of Azerbaijani land as a result of Armenian aggression in the late 20th century, pursues political goals and calls into question the overall objectivity of France.

"The Foreign Ministry of the Azerbaijan Republic again condemns this step by the French Senate and urges France to view history with more impartiality and not to turn such issues into political games."

The bill passed by the Senate will make it a crime to that the mass killings of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey in 1915 constituted genocide.
