Azerbaijan rises to 76th place in the UNDP
Azerbaijan has moved to 76th place in the UN Development Program's Human Development Index after the UNDP acknowledged an error in its report.

The mistake concerned the figures for the average length of education in the Human Development Report-2011, published by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on 2 November.

"The report said incorrectly that in Azerbaijan the 'Average duration of education' was 8.6 years instead of 11.1 years, which consituted an error. Milorad Kovačević, chief statistician at the UNDP’s Human Development Report Office, said that this error had already been eliminated. As a result, Azerbaijan ranks 76th place in the world rankings," a spokesman for Azerbaijan's State Statistical Committee told.

The State Statistical Committee originally raised the error with the UNDP.

"As a result of insistent correspondence, which lasted about two months, the UN Development Program acknowledged the error in relation to Azerbaijan in its annual report," the committee said.

The UNDP originally placed Azerbaijan in 91st place in the Human Development Index.

"In the report on 'Gross National Income per capita, Azerbaijan was in 81st place: in world practice, this is a fairly good indicator of the direction of Azerbaijan’s economy for the purposes of human development," the State Statistical Committee spokesman said.
