Iranian media must stop anti-Azerbaijan
A senior Azerbaijani Presidential Administration official has discussed cooperation with the Iranian media during a visit to Tehran.

Ali Hasanov, head of the public and political affairs department at the Presidential Administration, had meetings with the Iranian deputy culture minister with responsibility for the media, Mohammad Jafar Mohammadzadeh, and with the heads of Iran's national broadcaster IRIB.

Ali Hasanov said during the meetings that anti-Azerbaijani propaganda by some Iranian media should be stopped. Hasanov said that the two countries should treat one another with respect in the information space.

IRIB's international TV channel, Sahar TV, which broadcasts in Azerbaijani to much of the Azerbaijan Republic, has long been a target of criticism by the Azerbaijani authorities.

In September, the head of the Presidential Administration, Ramiz Mehdiyev, said in a conference paper that "the notorious Sahar 1 international TV channel targets an audience in Azerbaijan, spreading untrue and false information about our country".

Back in March 2010, Ali Hasanov accused the channel of trying to foment unrest in Azerbaijan through the broadcast of a provocative video clip.

"We discussed future perspectives and problems of cooperation in the information sphere with Iranian officials," Ali Hasanov said of his recent meetings.

Discussions focused in general on information policy and the situation in the media and specifically on broadcasting in the border areas.

They discussed the work of individual media which had recently "distorted the real situation" in the two countries, the agency said.

During the meetings, Ali Hasanov talked about the situation of freedom of speech and the press in Azerbaijan, the latest achievements in broadcasting and work done to modernize information technology.

The meetings noted that some internal and external forces, interested in harming relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, made skilful use of the information space. They said that the propaganda did not meet the national and state interests of either country. Expansion of the rapidly developing relations between the two side requires the continuation of the delicate apporach to issues that affect mutual interests in the existing information space.

Continuing his thoughts on issues that affect the national interests and security of Azerbaijan, Ali Hasanov said that the Iranian media should stop anti-Azerbaijani propaganda.

Hasanov said that Iran had the moral right to make the same demands of Azerbaijan. The historical fates of Azerbaijan and Iran require them to live as good neighbours and friends. This means that both sides should respect one another's sociopolitical life, domestic affairs and government system.

Noting that Azerbaijan is a law-governed, secular state, Ali Hasanov said that the country would never allow the artificial import from abroad of democracy and religious sects, said.

IRIB Chairman Ezzatollah Zarghami said he was pleased with the meeting with Ali Hasanov and said he was in complete agreement with his views on the formation of a healthy media environment that meets the interests of both countries.

He noted the importance of establishing comprehensive, mutual and effective cooperation on this.

As well as IRIB Chairman Ezzatollah Zarghami, Ali Hasanov met the deputy heads of IRIB, Mohammed Sarafraz, Seyed Mohammad Hosseini and Ali Asgari.

The head of Azerbaijan's National TV and Radio Council, Nushiravan Maharramli, the deputy minister of communications and information technology, Iltimas Mammadov and the Azerbaijani ambassador to Iran, Javanshir Akhundov, took part in the meetings too.
