Moscow backs Azerbaijan's bid for UN Security Council seat

Russia will support Azerbaijan's candidacy to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

"We appreciated and understand the importance of this issue and will strive for its successful resolution in line with Azerbaijani interests," Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich told a briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.

Azerbaijan has been lobbying support for its Security Council bid for the past few months.

Addressing the UN General Assembly in September, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov also appealed for support for Azerbaijan's bid.

"The year 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s membership of the United Nations, though, unlike other candidates from the Group of Eastern European States, we have never had the opportunity to be a member of the Security Council. Azerbaijan’s election to the Security Council will contribute to redressing the under-representation of small developing countries and bring a more balanced membership to this United Nations body," Mammadyarov said.

The elections for non-permanent members of the UN Security Council are expected to be held on 21 October.

Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovenia have all been nominated for the one available seat for the Eastern European region.
