The operative situation in the frontier regions of Russia and Azerbaijan is currently stable- Rashid Nurgaliyev

Rashid Nurgaliyev has spoken at a joint collegial session of the two countries.

The operative situation in the frontier regions of Russia and Azerbaijan is currently stable, said Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, speaking at the joint collegial session of the two countries on 4 October.

The event was held in Guba, 168 kilometers of Baku. Beside Nurgaliyev, it also involved Azerbaijani Interior Minister Ramil Usubov, as well as Minister of Interior Affairs of Dagestan Abdurashid Magomedov and chief of the Interior Ministry’s State Department of the North Caucasus Federal Province Sergey Chenchik, according to the
official website of the Yedinaya Rossiya party.

The border between Russia and Azerbaijan lies via Dagestan.

"Thanks to the coordinated actions of the Interior Ministries of Azerbaijan and Russia, the operative situation on the border is now stable and tends to improve", Nurgaliyev said.

He said there is a need to continue joint operations, since the past decade clearly showed that problems can be settled effectively only based on a coordinated approach.

\"Joining efforts has assumed increasing importance in connection with the activities of international terrorist organizations. This is a common danger for us. And in this regard, the exercise of internal troops, which I saw yesterday, causes a special interest", said the Minister.

However, he noted that there are a number of issues that require further joint action.

\"There is information about the crimes of international groups in the external economic, financial, banking and other fields, and we must now make joint efforts to stop them\", said Nurgaliyev.

He noted that various extremist organizations have not abandoned their attempts to discredit the partnership between the two countries. It is also necessary to detect and prevent the actions of the criminal groups, which use channels of crossing the border.

\"We need to be careful and attentive to urban and regional law enforcement bodies that are on the border\", said Nurgaliyev.

In addition, he recalled that he Russian-Azeri special working group on harmonization and coordination of cooperation between police forces in border areas was formed in April 2007..

The joint work plan of the group was signed for 2012 on 4 August of this year, which the Minister praised as a specific and intense. According to him, in the active group there are a number of successful operations to arrest dangerous criminals. So, the operation ‘Border - a barrier’ was held in frontier areas on 19-25 people. More than 100 criminals who were wanted for serious crimes on both sides were detained as a result.

\"I believe that further work will address more effectively the efforts to identify and tackle crime in the border regions\", said Nurgaliyev.

He noted that a similar operation is planned for next year.

In conclusion, the Minister noted that the meetings between law enforcement agencies of both countries have become more intense and focused on a specific work. As a result the board of ministers signed a protocol of the meeting, expressing the view of the urgent need to continue specific anti-criminal operation in the borderline areas.
