5.9-magnitude quake hits Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush

An Afghan official said Monday that the epicenter of a magnitude-5.9 earthquake was in a remote and sparsely populated region bordering Pakistan, China and Tajikistan, SIA reports quoting the AP.

Mohammad Aslim Sayas, deputy director of the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, said there have not yet been any reports of casualties or damage after the quake that occurred late Sunday. The US Geological Survey says the epicenter was 21km south-southwest of the town of Ashkasham in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, 300 kilometers northeast of Kabul. The quake was felt across northern Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and in the Indian capital of New Delhi. A magnitude-7.5 earthquake, also in Afghanistan’s northern Badakhshan province, struck on October 26.
