Al-Qaeda launched simultaneous attacks on two army positions in southeastern Yemen early on Friday, and 12 soldiers and 19 extremists were killed, AFP reported, citing an army officer. Army positions near the town of Shibam and in Wadi Sir in the Hadramawt province were targeted. The area is a stronghold for Al-Qaeda, whose militants control the provincial capital, Mukalla. Shibam, known as the "Manhattan of the Desert" for its high-rise mud-brick buildings, is a UNESCO world heritage site.
