On Wednesday three U.S. Forest Service firefighters have been killed after their vehicle crashed and was likely caught by flames as they battled a blaze in north-central Washington state, authorities said.
"The firefighters were engaged in initial attack operations and were involved in a vehicle accident when it is believed that the fire overtook the vehicle," a statement from Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest said early Thursday.
Four other firefighters were injured. It was not immediately clear if they were traveling in the same vehicle as the deceased.
