AirAsia plane found: Debris confirmed to be from missing flight QZ8501
Indonesian rescue workers have found bodies and luggage off the coast of Borneo Island as officials this morning confirmed they had discovered debris from the missing AirAsia flight.
AirAsia flight QZ8501, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday during bad weather as it was travelling from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.
And large objects resembling the ‘wall or door’ of the plane, bodies, life-jackets and luggage have all been seen in the search zone for the plane, which was carrying 162 people when it vanished.
Relatives wept as the bodies floating in the Java Sea were broadcast on television this morning, with Search and Rescue Agency chief Soelistyo saying they were ’95 percent sure’ the debris was from the missing plane.
‘It has been confirmed that it is debris from an aircraft bearing red and white colours,’ said Djoko Murjatmodjo, acting director of air transportation at the transportation ministry.
Earlier, air force official Agus Dwi Putranto told a press conference that ‘about 10 big objects’ had been spotted as well as many smaller white objects around 10 kilometres from the location the plane was last seen on radar.
