SAM participates at the 6th Annual European Gas Supply and Infrastructure conference
SAM was represented at the 6th Annual European Gas Supply and Infrastructure conference in Vienna, Austria
The 6th Annual European Gas Supply and Infrastructure conference took place last week in Vienna, Austria. The conference was organized by Platts with support of Ministry of Energy of Austria. This important meeting brought together leading experts, gas companies, TSOs, traders, pipeline operators and developers to discuss key themes of critical importance to the European gas industry including an update on the current status of all the major pipeline projects with representation from the main Southern Gas Corridor as well as analysis from expert commentators.
Azerbaijani position on the issue was represented by Ms. Gulmira Rzayeva who is a leading research fellow at the Center for Strategic Studies of Azerbaijan. In her speech Ms. Rzayeva touched upon new developments on the mega project and pointed out that Turkish desire to bring Turkmen gas to Turkey and further to Europe via Iranian territory would affect the Azerbaijani interest in this important project. She mentioned that for that reason the decision on Transcaspian project should be taken any time soon to transport Turkmen gas via Azerbaijani territory.
The SD II consortium needs to make a $25 billion decision over the next few months that will determine the future of Azerbaijan for decades to come. Everything must be in place over the coming months and not necessarily wait until the self-imposed deadline of June 2013. If the decision is put off, Iraqi, Qatari, North African or East Mediterranean gas will "intervene" and capture the markets that SD might target.
