Azerbaijani citizens detained in Chechnya were brought back to the country

Azerbaijani citizens detained in Chechnya have been brought back to the country, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Aykhan Hajizada stated in response to a media inquiry regarding the return of Azerbaijani citizens detained in Chechnya, SİA reports.

According to him, as soon as information was received about the detention of Azerbaijani citizens Elkhan Shirinov Akbar, born in 1975, Vugar Maharramov Nazim, born in 1982, and Nihad Rzayev Tafdig, born in 2004, a note verbale was immediately sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation to ensure their return to the country, and negotiations were held with the Russian Foreign Ministry and other relevant authorities.

"Additionally, a phone conversation took place between our Embassy and the detained citizens. As a result of efforts to ensure the return of our citizens to the country, mentioned citizens were brought back to Azerbaijan via land, through the border crossing with the Russian Federation on September 21," the Ministry official emphasized.

Note that approximately one month ago, reports emerged that three Azerbaijani citizens, Elkhan Shirinov, Vugar Maharramov and Nihad Rzayev were detained in Chechnya on charges of violating the migration laws of the Russian Federation and later Elkhan Shirinov and Vugar Maharramov were allegedly recruited for military training in Grozny, with the aim of being sent to the war in Ukraine.
