Sir Winston Churchill’s archive, including original drafts of his iconicwartime speeches, is to sit alongside the Magna Carta and the Bayeux Tapestry in a register of pivotal documents in world history.
UNESCO, the international heritage body, has added the collection of more than a million documents written by or belonging to the former prime minister to its International Memory of the World Register.
The papers will remain at the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge.
But UNESCO’s announcement – made on the 141st anniversary of Churchill’s birth - means the archive will receive world-class preservation advice and assistance in promoting his words world-wide, both online and in print.
