IS group kidnaps scores of Syrian Christians

Militants belonging to the Islamic State (IS) group have abducted more than 50 civilians from Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria, monitoring groups said on Tuesday.

The extremist fighters swept through the Assyrian villages, nestled along the banks of the Khabur River near the town of Tel Tamr in Hasaka province, around dawn on Monday.

The kidnappings were reported by activist group A Demand For Action, which focuses on religious minorities in the Middle East, as well as the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The observatory said that 56 villagers had been taken.
