Israeli military responds to Palestinian militants' rockets

srael and Palestinian militants have traded fire across the Gaza Strip, after Egyptian-mediated talks in Cairo failed to extend a 72-hour truce in a month-long war.

The Israeli military responded with air strikes at "terror sites" across Gaza after militants launched rockets from the enclave, an Israeli military spokesman said. Palestinian medics say a child was killed in the attacks, the first reported death since the temporary ceasefire ended.

"A 10-year-old was killed in an Israeli air strike on a mosque in Sheikh Radwan," emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP news agency, adding that a further six people were injured.

A statement from the Israeli army said a civilian was moderately wounded and soldier lightly wounded by a rocket that hit southern Israel.

"The renewed rocket attacks by terrorists at Israel are unacceptable, intolerable and short-sighted," Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner said.

"Hamas's bad decision to breach the ceasefire will be pursued by the IDF (Israel Defence Forces), we will continue to strike Hamas, its infrastructure, its operatives and restore security for the state of Israel."

The Israeli military said "Gaza terrorists" had fired at least 57 rockets on Friday and the Iron Dome interceptor system had been used against some of them.

Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees claimed responsibility for the salvoes from the Hamas-dominated enclave.

Earlier in the day, rocket warning sirens sounded in southern Israel as the IDF said at least 18 rockets were fired from Gaza. Israel's interceptor system brought two rockets down. No injuries or damage were reported.
