EU Heads Disagree Over Executive Leadership

Heads of European Union nations are in Brussels for a two-day summit in which they are expected to select a new head of the European Commission, the union's executive branch.

Jean-Claude Juncker, a former prime minister of Luxembourg, is widely expected to be confirmed as the next head of the commission.

However, British Prime Minister David Cameron opposes Juncker's prospective leadership as commission president, saying Friday that he is "not the right person to take this organization forward." Despite having few allies on the matter, Cameron says Juncker lacks the will and resources to implement reforms.

Cameron's opposition reinforces fears that Britain, which still uses its own currency instead of the euro, could choose to leave the European Union.

On Thursday, many EU heads of state gathered in Ypres, Belgium, to mark a century since the start of World War I. The ceremony at the Menin Gate memorial came just two days before the 100 year anniversary of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination in Sarajevo.
