United States President Barack Obama has warned Russia that G7 nations are ready to impose additional costs on Russia over the crisis in Ukraine.
Obama issued his warning during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron in Brussels after a G7 summit on Thursday. The US President said that, given Russia's influence over militants in Ukraine, it continued to have a responsibility to convince them to end their violence and enter into dialogue with Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko, who is set to be inaugurated on Saturday.
"Russia needs to recognize that President-elect Poroshenko is the legitimately elected leader of Ukraine and engage the government in Kiev," Obama said.
He added he had no doubt that he would see Putin on Friday in France during the D-Day commemorations, marking the World War II landing operations of the Allied forces in Normandy on 6 June 1944.
