U.S warns Russia against using gas as a weapon

"We have, all along through this crisis, made clear our view that it is inappropriate to use energy as a weapon or a tool against another nation.Russia should refrain from using the gas it supplies to Ukraine as a weapon" the White House said on Thursday SIA reports quoting Anadolu Agency.

In a letter released on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow would only deliver gas to Ukraine if it received payment in advance starting in June.

"We have, all along through this crisis, made clear our view that it is inappropriate to use energy as a weapon or a tool against another nation," said Jay Carney, the White House Press Secretary, while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, according to a transcript released by the White House. "And that would certainly be the case in this circumstance".

Carney further warned that any disruption to Ukraine’s energy flows could be met with unspecified consequences that "would also affect Russia fairly profoundly".

Marie Harf, the deputy State Department spokesperson, said that any energy disputes between Russia and Ukraine should be resolved through negotiations, not unilateral action.

"There's a trilateral talk situation between Ukraine, the EU and Russia on gas pricing and the next round is scheduled for the end of this week," she said. "I believe that's the appropriate forum to negotiate price and supply issues".
