Putin tells Obama referendum "legal"

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has told U.S. President Barack Obama in a phonecall that the Crimea referendum was "fully consistent with the norms of international law and the UN Charter", according to the Kremlin.

Putin said that the current administration in Ukraine was insufficient and was reluctant to stop "ultra-nationalist groups", which threatened Russian-speakers in the country, according to the Kremlin press office.

The Russian leader is in favour of an observatory group from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, said the statement.

The two leaders, although having different opinions, said they would search together for a solution, it added.
