Iranian President slams opponents of nuclear deal

In an apparent rebuke to hard-liners in the Islamic Republic, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has criticized domestic opponents of the nuclear deal struck with world powers.

Local media report that Rouhani told a group of oil workers that opponents to the nuclear agreement are opposed to having normal ties with the world for the sake of personal interests. The report of Rouhani’s comments comes after hard-liners in Iran claimed the nuclear deal tramples on Iran’s uranium enrichment rights, calling it a "poison chalice." Despite the opposition, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters, has supported Iran’s nuclear negotiations.

Last week, the so-called P5+1 group of world powers struck an agreement with Iran over the country’s nuclear programme. Iran agreed to start implementing the terms of the Geneva deal struck in November. Under the deal, Iran agreed to cap its uranium enrichment in return for some sanctions relief from the West.
