Destroying Syria's chemical weapons in another country could be "the most viable option," the chief of the global chemical weapons watchdog said on Tuesday.
Speaking at an Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu said Syria's proposal to destroy the chemical weapons elsewhere was based on "practical challenges of carrying out destruction work in the midst of an armed conflict," as well as on "resource limitations."
He said a Syrian delegation was expected to arrive in The Hague on Tuesday for talks on finalizing plans for the destruction of the country's chemical weapons.
The OPCW said on Thursday last week that Syria has destroyed or rendered inoperable all of its declared chemical weapons production and mixing facilities ahead of a Nov. 1 deadline.
Uzumcu said the chemical weapons watchdog would continue in November the verification and destruction of unfilled chemical munitions in Syria, as well as the "destruction of specialized equipment and buildings at production, mixing and filing plants."
