US, UK and France "committed to ending violence" in Syria

The foreign ministers of the US, UK and France have announced an agreement to press for a strong-worded UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution on a recent plan aimed at eliminating Syria's chemical arms, SIA reports citing Anadolu Agency.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said the three permanent UNSC members would not "tolerate anything less than full compliance" from the Syrian government and would as a last resort invoke Chapter 7 of the UN Charter for the use of force.

The US and Russia agreed Saturday on a diplomatic move to eliminate Syria's poisonous gas stockpiles in a deal which requires the Syrian regime to reveal its chemical weapons program within a week and to sign an international agreement banning chemical arms.

According to the deal, weapons inspectors would be on the ground by November and the stockpiles would be destroyed or removed by mid-2014.

- Syria 'without Assad'

Following Monday's trilateral meeting between the US, UK andFrance in Paris, Kerry said the "P3" foreign ministers remain "committed to ending violence" in Syria and hope to achieve an outcome that would eventually lead to a negotiated settlement to the civil war which the UN says has killed over 100,000 people since March 2011.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and his French counterpart Laurent Fabius said the initiative to strip Bashar al-Assad's government off of its chemical arms was "not incompatible with pursuing political solution" to the ongoing conflict.

Kerry said the planned negotiations might pave the way for a "new Syria," one that would be "pluralistic" and "secular" and without its embattled autocratic leader.

Kerry had earlier said that the August 21 chemical weapons attack, which the US blames on the Syrian government, remains a "stain" on the world's conscience.

He stressed that the US-Russian diplomatic initiative was "not a game," and urged Damascus to keep its promises.

The Syrian government confirmed earlier that it would comply with the plan and join the Chemical Weapons Convention it had refused to sign twenty years ago.
