40% of Armenia's population wishes to leave the country

7 April, 2013 edition of the "Armenian news" daily newspaper sponsored by powerful Armenia diaspora of France published a Gullop World Institute survey results conducted in twelve post-Soviet countries based on living standards and wellbeing of respondents, SIA reports citing Newtimes.az.

According to the survey, 40% of Armenia’s population wants to leave the country. It ranks first among the former Soviet Union countries in terms of people ready to abandon their home country. Moldova ranks second with 32%, followed by Ukraine (21%), Belarus (17%) and Kyrgyzstan (10%). When asked "Why do you want to leave your country?" half of respondents, that is 52%, said they sought better living standards, 13% looked for better future for their children and 45% cited unemployment and other reasons.

While Armenia topped the list with 40% of citizens willing to leave their country, some 8-10% of respondents in neighboring Azerbaijan and Georgia said they only wished to travel abroad. Armenians seeking to establish their lives elsewhere named Russia, Europe and the United States as favorite destinations. The abovementioned article claimed that by unofficial estimates some 50% of citizens are ready to abandon Armenia, despite the efforts of the authorities to revive the economy and to curb unemployment. Corruption, appetite for enrichment among public officials, certain political changes, gradual impoverishment of the population and unemployment are the key reasons for growing immigration. If those issues are not timely addressed the number of people fleeing the country is likely to grow.

Survey was conducted among citizens aged 15 and older in 12 countries of the former Soviet Union.
