“Horrific levels of violence” in Syria

At least 200 people died in Syria on Thursday on another deadly day in a crisis that started 18 months ago.

Regime forces and their allies killed at least 21 people in the Damascus suburb of Moadamieh Thursday, an opposition group said. They are among 68 people killed in Syria's capital and its countryside, the opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria said. At least 87 others were slain elsewhere in Syria, the group said. State-run TV described a government operation in the northern Aleppo province that killed and injured "a number of terrorists."

Syrian forces have used heavy artillery and air strikes against rebels in the capital Damascus and Aleppo.

An investigation by Amnesty International has found that civilians are suffering "horrific levels of violence" in the battle for Aleppo.

The NGO said Syrian government forces are carrying often indiscriminate attacks in areas where rebels are operating, putting local residents in grave danger.

Western powers believe Syria may unleash its stockpile of chemical weapons in the conflict.
