Queen Elizabeth II welcomes Turkish president
Queen Elizabeth II of Britain formally welcomed Turkish President Abdullah Gul and his spouse Hayrunnisa Gul to London on Tuesday.

The welcoming ceremony took place at Horse Guards Parade, near Buckingham Palace.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu are accompanying Gul on the visit.

This is the first visit presidential level visit from Turkey to Britain in 23 years. Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit to Turkey in 2008.

Britain has a maximum of two state visits per year. This year's first visit was paid by US President Barack Obama.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Tuesday met British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Gul and Cameron later made a joint press statement after their meeting at Number 10 Downing Street, which was also attended by Ali Babacan, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish ambassador in London, Unal Cevikoz, and Turkey's deputy chief of military staff.

"We are living in a golden era of Turkish-British relations," Gul told reporters, adding that three million tourists from Britain visited Turkey each year and that around 40,000 Britons had settled in Turkey.

Gul said Turkey and Britain shared a future vision for peace and prosperity, adding that the two countries had worked together as strategic partners since 2007.

Gul said his meeting with Cameron had discussed ongoing settlement talks in Cyprus, adding that Turkey and Britain supported the UN-brokered reunification negotiations.

"I made a specific emphasis that if the European Union fails to act with a strong political will the reunification of the island might become impossible due to the Greek Cypriot side's unwillingness for a solution," Gul said. "We need to encourage both sides towards a settlement as the Greek Cypriot administration gets ready to assume the EU helm at such a critical moment for Europe."

The British prime minister, on his part, said Turkey was "an important friend, a crucial trade partner and a powerful NATO ally", adding that Turkey was "an effective leader" in its region due to its unique position between the East and the West.

Cameron said Tuesday's meeting with the Turkish president also covered the latest development in Syria, adding, "The leadership of Turkey and the Arab League shows the way to stop the bankrupt oppressive regime in Syria."

Cameron said Britain supported Turkey's accession to the European Union, adding that the country made significant progress towards membership in the past 10 years.

The British prime minister said his country also extended strong support to Turkey's fight against terrorism, adding that Britain condemned the attacks of the terrorist PKK organization.
