Stephen Fry, the comedian and broadcaster, is to marry his partner Elliott Spencer, telling fans he is "very very happy" despite his hopes of a "private wedding" being dashed.
Fry, 57, has given formal notice to wed Spencer, 27, at a register office in Dereham, Norfolk, near to where he grew up.
After details emerged in the Sun newspaper, he has now publically confirmed the news, joking his hopes of a private wedding had been spoiled.
Writing on Twitter, he said: ''Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag.
''I'm very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!''
He added: "Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx"
Spencer's father has said he is "over the moon" at the news.
Speaking at his home near Southampton, Robert Spencer, 57, said: "We are obviously very happy. We are over the moon, that is all I want to say."
Fry has been a prominent advocate of same-sex marriage, and last year hosted a Channel 4 programme featuring a "musical" gay wedding.
He has been spotted regularly with Elliott, a writer, in recent months, as they enjoyed themselves at Ascot racecourse, the Savoy hotel and in Fry's home town.
