Finnish startup calls itself competitor to Musk's Starlink

Finnish startup ReOrbit has emerged as a competitor to Elon Musk’s Starlink, reflecting growing European interest in independent space technology against a backdrop of rising geopolitical risks, SİA reports citing TechCrunch.

Founded in 2019 and based in Helsinki, ReOrbit offers countries comprehensive solutions for deploying and managing their own satellites. Unlike Starlink, which targets mass consumers and businesses, ReOrbit emphasizes complete sovereign control over communication and equipment for its clients.

The company’s core innovation is a software platform, comparable to Apple’s iOS, that allows management of satellites in both geostationary orbit (SiltaSat) and low Earth orbit (UkkoSat). This versatility is particularly valued by nations that prioritize space technologies for defense and infrastructure purposes.

ReOrbit CEO Sethu-Saveda-Suvanam stated that the startup has already signed a major contract worth hundreds of millions with one country and several memorandums of understanding with others. While the company is capable of developing independently without outside funding, a new financing round will accelerate growth. ReOrbit aims to reach one billion euros in orders over the next four years and achieve “unicorn” status.

The record-setting funding round was led by Finnish firm Springvest. Out of the 45 million euros raised, 8 million came from private investors and family offices within just four and a half hours—a speed unmatched in Springvest’s history. The remaining 37 million euros were provided by institutional investors, including Varma, Elo, and Icebreaker.vc.

Looking ahead, ReOrbit plans to expand its presence in Europe and launch a demonstration satellite into orbit in collaboration with the European Space Agency in the second quarter of 2025.
