French judge questions Pavel Durov on substance of Telegram case for first time
Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrived at the Paris court for the first time for questioning on the substance of the case regarding the potential involvement in criminal activities, carried out with the use of the online messenger, AFP reported.
According to the report, Durov arrived at the court at about 10 a.m. (local time), accompanied by lawyers David-Olivier Kaminski and Christophe Ingrain. He refused to comment on the court proceedings and the charges for the press, saying only that he "believes in the French justice."
On August 24, Durov was detained at the Le Bourget airport. His preliminary detention ended on August 28, the businessman was delivered to the court, where the court investigator indicted Durov on six counts, which include complicity in the administration of an online platform in order to enable illegal transactions within a criminal group. According to the Paris Prosecutor’s Office, such offense may carry imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine of 500,000 euros.
The investigative judge ruled to put Durov under court supervision with an obligation to pay a bail of 5 million euro. Durov was also ordered to visit a police station twice a week and barred from leaving France.
