During the COP29 conference in Baku, ActionAid organized a session dedicated to the topic of climate financing.
According to Report, representatives of the organization called for a fair distribution of climate finance obligations and urged for immediate action to combat climate change.
Participants emphasized that, in the current reality, the contribution of developed countries to climate financing is disproportionate to the amount of pollution they are responsible for.
"Rich countries must stop profiting from our planet's problems. They are trying to shift financing obligations onto the Global South to avoid responsibility for their own actions, said Teresa Anderson, Global Climate Justice Lead at ActionAid.
According to Anderson, statistical data show that developing countries bear far less historical responsibility for climate change than developed nations. In this regard, the obligations of developed and developing countries for climate financing should be distributed fairly, in accordance with the damage caused to nature, she said.
"If we want the scale of climate action to be sufficient to save our future, the countries guilty of the climate crisis must pay to fix the situation," Anderson stressed.
