The first American-made Abrams tanks have been delivered to Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday, SIA reports.
The tanks have arrived months ahead of initial estimates and in time to be used in Kyiv’s counteroffensive against Russian forces.
More M1 Abrams tanks will be sent in the coming months, according to two U.S. defense officials who said that those shipped into Ukraine on Saturday were the first of 31 that the Biden administration has promised to provide.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly, would not say how many have been delivered so far, and Mr. Zelensky offered no details in a post on his Telegram channel.
Tanks arrived in May at the Army’s Grafenwoehr Training Area in Bavaria, where Ukrainian crews began an accelerated training course soon afterward.
