Lake Urmia is drying up due to the negligent policy of the Iranian authorities towards the nature of South Azerbaijan, South Azerbaijani expert Sattar Sevgin said at the public discussion on 'Draining of Lake Urmia' held in Baku, SİA informs.
He noted that although many protests were held in Iran, outside the country, and in front of the Iranian Embassy in Baku, the Iranian government has not taken any serious measures regarding the Lake Urmia.
Sevgin asserted that, on the contrary, those protesting this process in Iran and outside the country are subjected to political and physical persecution, arrested, and tortured to intimidate the activists.
According to him, the Iranian government exploits the natural resources of South Azerbaijan and spends them on developing Persian-speaking provinces: "Lake Urmia is also drying up due to the negligent policy of the Iranian authorities towards the nature of South Azerbaijan. Iran is trying to Persianize Azerbaijanis and assimilate Azerbaijani Turks. They take all their underground resources and factories to the Persian regions. Iran does not care about the development of Azerbaijan. If Iran were a free and democratic country, it would call Azerbaijan a brotherly country like Turkiye. Iran was directly involved in the occupation of Karabakh. Iran does not want Azerbaijan to be strong. Women's rights in Iran are violated, and the public and social situations are in difficult conditions.
