There is currently no vaccine or approved treatment for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which has caused more than 200 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, SİA informs, citing international medical organizations.
Africa CDC confirmed over 875 infections and 202 deaths in just over a month. Humanitarian groups warn the actual scale may be higher, as the virus continues to spread in remote, conflict‑affected areas of Congo.
To curb the outbreak, scientists, pharmaceutical companies, and international organizations are accelerating the development of new vaccines and treatments.
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the most promising candidate to be a vaccine based on the rVSV platform, previously used for the only licensed Ebola vaccine, now adapted specifically to target the Bundibugyo strain.
More efforts are underway: Oxford University researchers are collaborating with the Serum Institute of India on a ChAdOx1‑based vaccine, while US company Moderna is developing a treatment using mRNA technology.
