French court orders release of Kanak leader Christian Thein

A Paris court has ordered the release of Christian Thein (New Caledonia), the head of the Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS), and other participants in the movement due to insufficient grounds for arrest, SİA informs referring to Le Monde newspaper.

The corresponding ruling was made on the evening of June 3. It states that there are no grounds for further detention of Christian Thein and three activists - Dimitri Qenegei, Guillaume Vama and Ervan Uaetheanen.

Christian Thein was arrested last June on charges of organizing protests in New Caledonia, and was deported to France along with seven of his associates. The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has repeatedly taken steps to release activists from New Caledonia, organized events in Azerbaijan and abroad in defense of their rights and provided comprehensive support to their families.

In 2024, the BIG, together with 14 pro-independence political movements, issued a statement in support of New Caledonia and condemning France's actions.

Vice-president of the Union of Kanak and Exploited Workers (USTKE) Rock Haocas praised the group's work. The organization was criticized by the French authorities, and its actions were seen as Azerbaijan's interference in the internal affairs of New Caledonia.

In April 2025, French Foreign Minister Manuel Valls called the group's letter offering to mediate on the future of New Caledonia "an attempt to undermine the stability of France." The statement issued emphasized that France doesn't recognize the BIG.
