Traces of torture found on remains in mass grave discovered in Khojaly

The remains found in a recently uncovered mass grave in Khojaly show clear signs of violent death and brutal torture, Eldar Samadov, Deputy Head of the Working Group of Azerbaijan’s State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Persons, said, according to SİA.

"Although international humanitarian law strictly prohibits the taking of civilians as hostages, these people were not only unlawfully detained but also subjected to horrific torture before being cold-bloodedly executed. Their bodies were then buried in a mass grave," Samedov emphasized.

He also noted that Azerbaijan has for years unsuccessfully appealed to the international community to help determine the fate of the victims of the Khojaly tragedy and other civilians who went missing during the conflict. However, the Armenian side continues to withhold any information regarding the whereabouts or fate of these individuals.

"The nature of the injuries leaves no doubt that the victims were subjected to deliberate violence. Fractures on the bones of hands, legs, and skulls show signs of blunt force trauma. Fragments of clothing found at the site indicate that the grave contains the bodies of civilians, most of whom, according to experts, were women," he added.
