From greasing machines to fueling hatred: Kocharyan's transformation exposed

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan once worked greasing machines at the Karabakh silk factory in Khankandi. But by 1988, he had risen to become one of the key figures in the anti-Azerbaijani movement, victim Nazeyka Atakishiyeva, who is testifying in a case involving members of the former separatist regime said in court.

According to SİA, Atakishiyeva, who was born in 1954 in Khankandi and lived there until the occupation, shared harrowing memories. She recalled that tensions between Armenians and Azerbaijanis were always present in the city—but in February 1988, things took a dramatic turn for the worse.

"From February 1988 onward, when we left work, we'd be ambushed by bearded men. They weren’t from Khankandi," she said.

She recounted being pelted with stones and insulted in front of her home by Armenian aggressors. "They banged on our doors, hurled insults, and told us, ‘Get out—this is our land now!’" Atakishiyeva testified.

She added that in that same February of 1988, her home was looted and destroyed. Her family had no choice but to flee to Aghdam.
