Kyrgyzstan has suspended servicing Russian "Mir" cards citing issues related to Latvia, SIA reports citing foreign media.
The head of the Kyrgyz government, Akylbek Japarov, made this announcement, stating that the software for Kyrgyzstan's "Elkart" payment system was developed by a Latvian company. Japarov warned that failure to cease dealings with the "Mir" card would result in the shutdown of the Interbank Processing Center (IPC).
"We have temporarily suspended it," said Akylbek Japarov, further emphasizing that the country's authorities are concerned about safeguarding the interests of the 4 million "Elcard" cardholders.
The official clarified that temporary services for Russian cards are no longer provided, indicating that measures and mechanisms would be implemented soon.
Additionally, the Prime Minister revealed plans to visit the US to explain Kyrgyzstan's economic ties with Russia, emphasizing the difficulty in severing relations with the country.
Starting from April 3, banks in Kyrgyzstan ceased servicing Russian "Mir" cards.
