Latvia intensifies checks on Russian citizens' visas and residency permits ahead of presidential elections

Latvian police and border services are set to scrutinize the visas and residence permits of Russians intending to vote at the Russian embassy in the upcoming presidential elections, SIA reports citing NRA newspaper.

Armands Ruksun, the head of Latvia's State Police, emphasized that law enforcement agencies must ensure that Russian citizens currently residing in the Republic of Latvia have the legal right to live in the country.

"Sufficient control will be maintained at the embassy entrance, and residency and visa verification points will be established in collaboration with the Border Patrol service," stated Ruksun.

He believes that these checks will help identify violators of the law who may face deportation to the Russian Federation in a timely manner.

Latvia's Minister of Justice, Inese Libina-Egnere, had previously stated that voting in the Russian presidential elections should be categorized as support for military operations in Ukrainian territory.
